Valley Glen, originally part of Van Nuys, started as Neighborhood Watch area in 1990. This group of vigilant homeowners did graffiti cleanup and created the Safe House program, which was later adopted by LAUSD. Valley Glen officially came into being on June 23, 1998. The Valley Glen Neighborhood Association expanded its boundaries to conform with the Department of Transportation designated boundaries.
Nestled in Valley Glen is Los Angeles Valley College, founded in 1949, with an enrollment today of 16,000 students. Los Angeles Valley College is the center of influence for education, personal development, lifelong learning, cultural activities, and career training in the San Fernando Valley.
Also located in prime Valley Glen is the Great Wall of Los Angeles, the world’s longest mural – 2,754 feet long! This portion of Valley Glen is along the L.A. River/Tujunga Wash flood control close to Grant High School. Begun in 1974 by San Fernando Valley native, Dr. Judith Baca, Founder and Artistic Director for Social and Public Art Resource Center, it was painted over five summers by mostly at risk youths between the ages of 14 and 21 to help beautify and restore the river. The Great Wall is a landmark pictorial representation of the history of ethnic peoples of California from prehistoric times to the 1950's. Production of the Great Wall has involved the support of many government agencies, community organizations, businesses, corporations, foundations, and individuals. The Great Wall hosts thousands of visitors every year. So consider a walk on the wild side of Valley Glen – walk along the terrain of the Tujunga Wash Greenway at Coldwater from Burbank to Vanowen and view the Great Wall of Los Angeles and enjoy the many native plants and wildlife of Valley Glen. Or, for another walk through Valley Glen you can stroll Valley Glen Community Park. Two laps around the Park will get you one mile of exercise.
With a diverse population, Valley Glen is well located in the San Fernando Valley with ease of access to major employment centers, schools, shopping centers and other amenities. Today, Valley Glen is recognized by all of the schools in the area, many of the merchants and most of the homeowners.
